This strongly aromatic, bushy perennial herb grows mainly along the coastal regions of South Africa. It has small, hairy, silvery-green leaves with yellow cluster flowers, giving rise to its genus name — from the Greek helios ("sun") and chrysos ("gold"). Imphepho or Towane in Sesotho ,also known as African immortelle, is an important plant in local folklore, where the smoke is burned in ritual to invoke trance states and connect with the ancestors.

The strongest-smelling of the Helichrysums, with notes of mint and cloves layered over a sweet, hay-like base. Slightly camphoraceous at the top, mellowing into a soft, honeyed, comforting dryness — evocative of wild grasslands and ritual smoke.
