This soft, aromatic, multi-stemmed perennial shrub, with its greyish-green, feathery leaves, is indigenous to the mountainous regions of South Africa. Its botanical name, Artemisia afra, derives from the Greek goddess Artemis. Known in Xhosa as "Umhlonyane," it is one of the most well-known and commonly used healing plants in Southern Africa.
